Hey, I'm Aly
A Toronto-based maker and woodworker , born and raised in the Philippines who likes to spend most of her time making things like furniture, curated objects and renderings.
I've always liked working with my hands — making, building and fixing things, long before I stumbled upon woodworking. When I was a kid I spent a lot of my time building my own playhouses with scraps and twigs and making silly toys from all sorts of materials and I have always been curious about construction or how things go together growing up.
In college I went on and studied architecture for two years and fell in love with the idea of customizing the spaces people live in, but I knew I wanted to be involved in building them as well, so when I moved in Canada I decided to look for jobs in the construction industry to learn the trades, but instead I was given a chance to work at a Toronto-based custom furniture shop.
I started working at Cabinet Inc. without any prior experience but by being observant and with the help of the talented furniture makers I've been working with, I was able to learn how to use the tools right and build furniture pieces I never thought I could make. I know I still have a long way to go in mastering my craft so I continue to learn and gain experience in the shop and at the same time find ways to keep making, keep building and keep finding better ways to do things.
Through my rendering skills, the knowledge I continue to gain about woodworking and the things I learned so far in architecture I try to help people visualize and bring their ideas to life.
